Siemens Mobility and Akiem have entered a framework agreement for the acquisition of 80 Vectron locomotives, including a firm order for 50 new Vectron Dual Mode Electric/Battery units and an option for 30 additional locomotives. As the launch customer for this battery-based variant, Akiem anticipates receiving the first deliveries in 2029 and 2030, after which it will offer the locomotives for lease across Europe.

Building on a partnership that began in 2021 and has already yielded 120 Vectron and Vectron Dual Mode locomotives, the new electric/battery version extends Siemens’s proven platform by replacing the diesel engine with a modular traction battery system. This configuration allows the locomotive to operate under overhead AC power or on non-electrified sections using batteries. Planned battery capacities exceed 2 MWh, delivering up to 2,400 kW to the wheels in both modes. The locomotive is designed to reach speeds of up to 160 km/h, produce a maximum tractive effort of 300 kN, weigh approximately 90 tons, and offer a train supply power of 480 kVA.

The battery-powered Vectron Dual Mode supports rail decarbonization by enabling climate-friendly operations on routes without continuous electrification. It offers operators greater flexibility, reduces CO2 emissions and noise compared to diesel-based solutions, and aligns with growing demand for sustainable rail freight.

Siemens Mobility, which recorded revenue of €12.4 billion and employed around 43,400 people worldwide in fiscal year 2025, continues to advance alternative traction technologies. Beyond the Vectron family, its portfolio includes battery-enabled regional trains such as the Mireo Plus B and hydrogen-powered Mireo Plus H, alongside hybrid variants of its mainline platforms.

Akiem, a leading European rolling stock lessor and maintenance provider, operates a fleet of over 770 locomotives and 42 passenger vehicles. With certified maintenance facilities across 22 countries and a team of around 500 employees, Akiem serves more than 100 customers. The new Vectron Dual Mode Electric/Battery will further expand Akiem’s offering of low-emission solutions for rail operators.
