On December 19, 2025, SKion GmbH signed a binding agreement to acquire key business units of BMZ Holding GmbH and BMZ Germany GmbH, pending approval by competition authorities. Previously a minority shareholder in the BMZ Group, SKion provided bridge financing during the companies’ self-administration proceedings to ensure operational continuity. After a structured bidding process, the creditors’ committee selected SKion’s proposal.
SKion plans to maintain and expand the acquired operations both nationally and internationally. The company intends to preserve BMZ’s battery technologies and leverage the expertise of its workforce, integrating a newly appointed leadership team and offering continued employment to as many staff members as possible. BMZ has been an important contributor to the energy storage value chain, and SKion views the acquisition as an opportunity to build on this foundation.
In October 2025, BMZ Germany filed for self-administration insolvency due to a liquidity shortfall and restructuring needs, driven in part by the loss of a major energy storage customer and related legal disputes. BMZ Holding was similarly affected, while other entities within the BMZ Group remained operational and were not subject to insolvency proceedings.
The restructuring concept developed by BMZ management and advisors calls for the operational segments of BMZ Holding and BMZ Germany to be spun out into a new corporate structure. Key priorities over the coming months include stabilizing and expanding customer and supplier relationships, refining organizational processes, and integrating employees into the new framework. This approach is designed to secure the group’s financial stability and support sustainable recapitalization.
The realignment strategy will leverage BMZ’s core technological competencies and workforce capabilities, target cost efficiencies, and support growth initiatives, particularly in industrial battery systems and customized energy storage solutions. With demand for high-performance battery systems on the rise, BMZ reports a healthy international order backlog.
