The Volkswagen Group has commenced series production of the ID.UNYX 08 at its Volkswagen Anhui facility in Hefei, marking a key milestone of its “In China, for China” strategy. Developed in collaboration with Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer XPENG, this full-size, all-electric SUV entered production just 24 months after the partnership was launched. The ID.UNYX 08 combines German engineering principles with locally sourced innovations and is tailored specifically to the preferences of Chinese customers.

Featuring an 800-volt ultra-fast charging system, the ID.UNYX 08 supports high-power charging and can achieve substantial range in minimal time. Its advanced driver assistance suite meets Level 2 ADAS requirements and includes continuous over-the-air (OTA) software updates, enabling the vehicle to evolve technologically throughout its lifecycle. Volkswagen says the new model adheres to the brand’s core values of safety, quality, driving comfort and durability.

The local development process involved the Volkswagen Group’s VCTC engineering center, XPENG and CARIAD China, jointly creating the China Electronic Architecture (CEA). This zonal electrical and electronic framework is set to underpin future Volkswagen models in China and will support both battery electric and combustion-powered vehicles. The ID.UNYX 08 is the first production vehicle based on this new architecture.

Oliver Blume, CEO of the Volkswagen Group, noted that the ID.UNYX 08 exemplifies the rapid progress of Volkswagen’s China strategy, combining local technological strengths with global expertise. Ralf Brandstätter, Board Member responsible for China and CEO of Volkswagen Group China, highlighted the Group’s intention to launch 20 new locally developed electric vehicles in China this year—averaging one model every two weeks.

He Xiaopeng, Chairman and CEO of XPENG, described the project as a demonstration of mutual trust and close collaboration, emphasizing the creation of long-term value for both partners. The market introduction of the ID.UNYX 08 is scheduled for the first half of this year, representing the first of two jointly developed models planned for launch by the end of the year.
