Zurich-based battery startup BTRY has secured CHF 4.6 million in an oversubscribed seed financing round led by Redstone VC, with participation from Bloomhaus Ventures, Linear Capital, Kickfund, Kick Foundation, and CustomCells founders Leopold König and Torge Thönnessen. Existing backers High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF) and Zürcher Kantonalbank also joined, underlining confidence in BTRY’s ultrathin solid-state battery technology.

The funds will advance the industrialization of BTRY’s roll-to-roll manufacturing process for solid-state batteries. These cells feature a stable architecture without liquid electrolytes, operate at temperatures up to 150 °C, and are nonflammable. At just 0.1 mm thickness, they can fully charge and discharge within one minute, enabling rapid-energy delivery for wireless IoT sensors, wearables, medical devices, and smart tags in logistics.

BTRY’s thin-film solid-state battery

Dr. Moritz Futscher, CEO and co-founder of BTRY, said the round confirms investor trust and will help translate leading-edge research into a scalable product. Mohamed Foulser, Investment Director at Redstone VC, noted that a compact, high-performance, safe battery is critical for next-generation devices awaiting market launch, and he believes BTRY can set a new benchmark in energy storage.

BTRY will deploy the capital to scale production infrastructure, refine industrial processes, and finalize supply agreements with pilot customers. The company’s approach applies semiconductor manufacturing techniques to battery production, achieving material efficiency and eliminating toxic solvents. This sustainable process aligns with environmental requirements and supports global deployment.

BTRY’s thin-film solid-state battery vs. conventional lithium-ion battery

Pascal Stürchler, CEO of Bloomhaus Ventures, highlighted the Swiss deep-tech team’s expertise and entrepreneurial spirit, positioning BTRY at the forefront of Europe’s next-generation battery manufacturers. Tianyi Zhou, Principal at Linear Capital, emphasized Asia’s manufacturing leadership and sees synergy between Asian production know-how and BTRY’s breakthrough solid-state technology.

Founded in 2023 as a spin-off from Empa and ETH Zurich, BTRY now has a 12-member team specializing in materials science, industrial scaling, and operations. The company’s mission is to enable applications that have been limited by conventional batteries, such as active tracking labels, high-temperature industrial sensors, MedTech applications, and compact consumer electronics.
