As an OEM in the electric vehicle battery ecosystem, BMW specifies battery requirements, oversees global suppliers, and assembles cells into high-voltage packs with thermal management, mechanical stabilization, and integrated electronic controls. Cells undergo quality inspections before module and pack assembly. BMW is developing advanced lithium-ion and solid-state cells through internal pilot plants and collaborations, with an emphasis on sustainable sourcing and recycling to close the battery value chain.
BMW’s Gen6 cylindrical battery cells, to power the NEUE KLASSE EV platform from 2025, offer increased energy density, faster charging, and extended driving range. They use cell-to-pack integration and structural battery mounting, making the pack a structural vehicle element. BMW is also evaluating large-format all-solid-state prototype cells in a modified i7.
Rollout of Gen6 cylindrical cells for the NEUE KLASSE platform starting 2025, with global factories up to 20 GWh annual capacity; road-testing all-solid-state prototype cells in a modified BMW i7 in Munich.
