Company Overview

BorgWarner Inc. was formed in 1928 through the merger of Borg & Beck, Warner Gear, Marvel-Schebler Carburetor Co. and Mechanics Universal Joint Co. Headquartered in Auburn Hills, Michigan, USA, the company designs and manufactures automotive and e-mobility systems. BorgWarner serves passenger cars, commercial and off-highway markets and has shifted toward electrification with integrated battery cell-to-pack manufacturing. The company’s mission is to accelerate innovative, sustainable mobility solutions and achieve carbon neutrality by 2035 while emphasizing inclusion, integrity and responsibility across its global operations.

Battery Technology

BorgWarner’s core technologies focus on electric propulsion and energy storage using NMC and LFP chemistries. NMC Gen3 Ultra High Energy packs deliver up to 98 kWh at 665V with more than 4,000 cycles for heavy-duty use. LFP packs use licensed blade-format cells for improved volumetric density, safety and cost-per-kWh. Systems employ a cell-to-pack architecture, modular scalable packs with active intercell liquid cooling (eCooler), distributed BMS with per-cell balancing and up to 800V management, and automotive-grade production standards. Circular battery initiatives target remanufacturing, repurposing and end-of-life recycling.

Products

BorgWarner supplies electric motors, inverters (including dual-inverter systems), integrated drive modules, turbochargers and complete battery systems with BMS and thermal management. Offerings include high-energy NMC packs and cost-effective LFP blade cell packs for buses, trucks, shuttles, marine and stationary storage. Modular, automotive-certified designs enable OEM customization and support high-cycle commercial duty cycles.

Recent Projects

In 2025 BorgWarner advanced manufacturing and R&D efforts: expanding Gigafactory 1 in Darmstadt to reach 5.4 GWh annual capacity; investing $42 million to add 3 GWh capacity at the Seneca, South Carolina facility; and winning an R&D 100 Award for an electric motor collaboration with Oak Ridge National Laboratory. These actions increased production capacity in Europe and the U.S. and validated motor technology through third-party recognition.

Investors

BorgWarner is publicly traded with a dispersed ownership base dominated by institutional investors (roughly 88%). Major institutional holders include BlackRock Advisors, Vanguard, Harris Associates, DFA and State Street. Individual and insider ownership is below 1% collectively. The shareholder mix is largely U.S.-based with international institutional participation and no controlling or activist shareholders reported.
