Company Overview

BroadBit Batteries Oy, founded in 2015 and headquartered in Espoo, Finland, was established by Andras Kovacs and David Brown. The company develops sodium-based metallic battery chemistries and complementary lithium electrolytes for commercial use. BroadBit focuses on materials and component IP, pilot cell validation, and licensing to cell and pack manufacturers. Its stated aim is to enable a lower-cost, safer, and more sustainable energy storage landscape by commercializing scalable batteries for electric vehicles, portable electronics, engine starters, and grid energy storage.

Battery Technology

BroadBit’s core technology uses metallic sodium and abundant sodium salts such as sodium chloride as active materials, distinct from intercalation-type sodium-ion cells. Key features include target specific energy up to ~300 Wh/kg for high-energy variants, high-power cells capable of very fast recharge (~5 minutes), and non-flammable inorganic electrolytes that remain safe in a fully discharged state. Manufacturing is designed around solvent-free, roll-to-roll processes and low-cost raw materials, reducing reliance on cobalt and nickel and improving transport, storage safety, and environmental footprint. The company also offers ProLion 3M electrolytes for LMFP Li-ion cells.

Products

BroadBit provides two sodium-based product families—Hi-Energy cells targeting high specific energy for EV range extension, and Hi-Power cells for rapid recharge and high-drain applications—plus ProLion 3M, a drop-in electrolyte for LMFP lithium cells. Offerings include lab and pilot cells, electrolyte supply, formulation services, and licensing. Target applications cover electric vehicles, engine starters, portable electronics, backup power, and grid energy storage.

Recent Projects

In October 2025 BroadBit launched ProLion 3M, a market-ready LMFP electrolyte aimed at improving cycle life, fast-charge capability, and low-temperature performance in lithium cells. Throughout 2025 the company published updated electrolyte formulations and white papers documenting performance improvements and piloting procedures to support adoption of ProLion in OEM and cell-maker test programs.

Investors

BroadBit has raised roughly €7.5 million from public and private sources, including a €2.5M European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator grant with eligibility for follow-on equity, Business Finland innovation support (~€0.6M), and a 2016 seed round of about €750k. The company has participated in accelerators and incubators such as Plug and Play and Airbus BizLab. Its funding mix emphasizes public innovation grants and strategic accelerator support alongside private investment.
