CMBlu Energy’s Organic SolidFlow technology combines characteristics of flow batteries and solid-state energy storage systems using carbon-based active materials and aqueous electrolytes to create a safe, modular, and sustainable long-duration energy storage platform. The system enables independent scaling of power and energy capacity, supporting discharge durations typically ranging from four to more than ten hours depending on application requirements. Unlike conventional lithium-ion systems, the technology avoids rare metals and conflict minerals entirely while relying on recyclable or reusable components and standard industrial manufacturing processes. The non-flammable electrolyte design reduces fire risks and positions the technology as a resilient infrastructure solution for renewable-heavy electricity grids, industrial energy storage, and critical backup power applications.
CMBlu Energy develops modular Organic SolidFlow battery systems designed for utility-scale and industrial stationary energy storage applications. The company’s systems feature carbon-based organic molecules, non-flammable aqueous electrolytes, modular energy and power scaling, long-duration discharge capabilities, and recyclable or reusable battery components. The technology is specifically designed to support renewable energy integration, grid balancing, peak shaving, industrial backup power, and long-duration energy storage (LDES) deployments.
In 2024, CMBlu partnered with Salt River Project to deploy a 5 MW / 10-hour Organic SolidFlow battery system in Phoenix, Arizona, expected to power approximately 1,125 homes upon completion in 2025. The company also collaborated with WEC Energy Group and Electric Power Research Institute on a 1–2 MWh pilot project at Milwaukee’s Valley Power Plant to evaluate extended-duration discharge performance and grid integration capabilities. In Germany, CMBlu is deploying a 20 MWh Organic SolidFlow battery system at the Mercedes-Benz Group AG Rastatt production facility, with operation expected in 2026. In early 2026, the company additionally signed a 5 GWh framework agreement with Uniper SE for future battery system deliveries beginning in 2027.
STRABAG SE invested €100 million in 2023 to support the expansion of CMBlu Energy’s Organic SolidFlow manufacturing capabilities in Europe and the United States. In 2025, the company also secured €30 million in support from the Greek Ministry of Energy for further international expansion activities. In April 2026, CMBlu completed the initial close of a €50 million Series C financing round involving investors including Samsung Ventures and STRABAG, reportedly surpassing a €1 billion valuation and strengthening the company’s position as one of Europe’s emerging energy storage scale-ups.
