Investor Overview

Launch NY is a Buffalo-based nonprofit venture development organization serving high-growth startups across Upstate New York. Its mission is to deliver pro bono mentorship and early-stage capital, connecting entrepreneurs with resources and investors to foster regional innovation. Led by Dr. Marnie LaVigne, the organization is certified as a Community Development Financial Institution by the U.S. Treasury. Through a toolkit and structured application process, it guides startups toward client company status, while also enabling supporters to contribute donations that fuel company development.

Through a nonprofit Seed Fund it offers initial investments of $25,000 to $100,000, and for-profit Limited Partner funds support larger rounds. To ensure readiness, startups complete at least three months of mentoring before seeking capital. An investor network offers local and regional backers opportunities to engage directly. To date, Launch NY has facilitated $5 million in direct investments and $65 million in co-investments from more than 130 co-investors. It also hosts events and programs that connect entrepreneurs with mentors and investors, including the Founders Go Big initiative.

A focus on clean energy and resource innovation is embodied in the Emerging Cleantech Opportunity Incubator, launched in 2018 with NYSERDA support. The program has accelerated more than 160 cleantech startups, representing nearly 20% of its portfolio. Investments include Bridge Green Upcycle, which recycles lithium-ion batteries without mining, and Dimien, a developer of vanadium-based cathode materials now part of Pure Lithium. In 2021, Launch NY backed Breezi’s building energy management sensors and analytics. A 2024 collaboration with Rapid Ventures established the ECO 2.0 initiative, extending support for climate-related ventures.
