Company Overview

Lithium de France, founded in 2020 and headquartered in Haguenau, France, is the first independent French operator combining geothermal heat production with battery‑grade lithium extraction. The company develops integrated projects that co‑produce renewable heat for industry and agriculture while recovering lithium from hot subsurface brines to supply European battery manufacturers. As a member of the Arverne group, its mission is to accelerate the energy transition by delivering low‑carbon heat and locally sourced lithium for electric mobility and decarbonized industry, with attention to environmental protection in Alsace.

Battery Technology

Lithium de France applies Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) methods to recover lithium from hot geothermal brines, using sorbents, ion‑exchange membranes and tailored separation steps rather than evaporation ponds or hard‑rock mining. The process is integrated with geothermal heat production, enabling co‑production of renewable heat and lithium chemicals with a reduced carbon footprint. The company pursues vertical integration from exploration and drilling to lithium chemical refining, and has contracted FEED work and ordered European equipment to support scalable extraction, concentration and refining facilities.

Products

Products include battery‑grade lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide monohydrate alongside renewable geothermal heat delivered to industrial, agricultural and municipal customers. Lithium outputs target EV battery manufacturers and stationary storage suppliers; heat outputs support decarbonization of local industry and farming operations. Production targets range from initial pilot volumes to larger commercial capacity by 2031.

Recent Projects

In 2025 Lithium de France began its first geothermal well drilling at the Schwabwiller site (November 24, 2025) and ran public consultations for two additional Exclusive Research Permits in late 2025. The company awarded a FEED contract to Sedgman (September 2025) for extraction, concentration and refining plant design and placed equipment orders with SLB ahead of drilling campaigns.

Investors

Ownership is led by Arverne Group (majority shareholder ~64%), with Equinor Ventures holding ~24% and Hydro Energy Invest AS represented indirectly (~9% via Arverne). In September 2025 the company closed a €40 million funding round (Series B2) with strategic participation from Equinor Ventures to support project development and scale‑up.
