Company Overview

Nordic Nano Group Oy is a Finnish renewable energy company headquartered in Helsinki, Finland, developing non-toxic nanocarbon materials and printed energy technologies for solar harvesting, energy storage and hydrogen production. The company operates R&D and pilot manufacturing with a planned production facility in Imatra. Nordic Nano’s mission is to accelerate a carbon-neutral transition by offering rare-earth-free, lightweight and fire-safe alternatives to conventional photovoltaic and battery systems. The company pursues scalable manufacturing, academic and industry collaborations, and public funding to move laboratory innovations toward commercial products.

Battery Technology

Nordic Nano develops planet-friendly nanocarbon materials and a proprietary screen-printing process that deposits ‘clay-like’ nanofluids to form ultra-thin solar films and solid-state salt battery layers. Materials include carbon nanotubes coated with titanium oxide and a sodium electrolyte; the chemistry is non-toxic and avoids rare-earth elements. Solar films are flexible, translucent and engineered to capture ultraviolet, visible and infrared wavelengths for improved low-light performance. The printed solid-state cells are shape-flexible and designed for thermal safety; company performance claims include up to 400 Wh/kg, >50,000 cycles and rapid charging (~5 minutes).

Products

Nordic Nano’s product portfolio centers on ultra-thin, flexible solar films and printed solid-state salt batteries. Solar films enable building-integrated PV and low-light harvesting; printed batteries offer high energy density, long cycle life, fast charging and mouldable form factors. Target applications include electric vehicles, stationary energy storage, consumer electronics and hydrogen systems, with an emphasis on non-toxic, rare-earth-free materials to simplify end-of-life handling.

Recent Projects

In 2025 Nordic Nano advanced pilot production and partnerships: a strategic collaboration with Donut Lab (October 2025) to integrate printed batteries into electric mobility projects, and initiation of production and recruitment in Imatra (September 2025). The Imatra activities are supported by an EU Just Transition Fund grant (~€2.98 million) and are positioned to feed a planned manufacturing ramp-up in 2026 and initial commercialisation pilots.

Investors

Nordic Nano’s financing combines strategic private investment and public grants. Donut Lab is a strategic investor and holds a board seat following an October 2025 investment. Public funding includes an EU Just Transition Fund award of approximately €2.98 million for production equipment in Imatra. Additional private investors have participated in earlier rounds but remain undisclosed; the company is combining public and private capital to scale manufacturing.
