Company Overview

Superior Graphite is a global manufacturer of advanced graphite and carbon materials, founded in 1917 as Superior Flake Groundbreaking Company. Headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, with manufacturing facilities in the United States and Sweden, the company specializes in electro-thermal treatment and purification of graphite materials for industries including battery production, metallurgy, and thermal management. It employs its environmentally conscious Green Graphitization Technology and extensive R&D to develop purpose-manufactured materials.

Battery Technology

Superior Graphite’s core battery technology centers on its electro-thermal Green Graphitization continuous purification process and thermal purification technology, producing battery-grade graphite with high purity, consistent particle distribution, superior conductivity, and long-term stability without chemical purification, reducing energy consumption by 70–80%.

Products

FormulaBT17 product line offering electro-thermally purified graphite materials designed for lithium-ion, advanced lead-acid, fuel cell, and alkaline batteries, delivering high purity, consistent particle size, superior conductivity, and enhanced cycle life.

Recent Projects

Recent projects include commissioning a new Specialty Carbon Plant in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, constructing an advanced anode materials facility, and completing a strategic realignment divesting the Desulco and X-Carb recarburizer business to Unimetal.

Investors

Superior Graphite is a privately held, family-owned graphite producer headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. It has appointed Accelerate Capital and Stanhope Capital to manage a planned $180M capital raise for its new 24,000-ton-per-annum anode materials facility in Hopkinsville, Kentucky (with additional capacity in Sundsvall, Sweden). In June 2023, the company secured a $29M financing facility from FGI—including a $25M asset-based revolver, a $5M uncommitted accordion feature and a $4M term loan for real estate and equipment—to support inventory and growth. Superior Graphite reported annual revenue of approximately $93.5M and is not publicly traded; equity investments, if any, occur via private placements with its appointed advisors.
