Company Overview

Urban Electric Power (UEP), a New York-based energy technology company founded in 2014 as a spin-out from the City University of New York Energy Institute, pioneers advancements in battery storage through its innovative zinc manganese dioxide (ZnMnO₂) rechargeable systems, repurposing stable alkaline battery chemistry into high-performance, eco-friendly solutions.

Battery Technology

Urban Electric Power’s core innovation revamps alkaline battery chemistry into rechargeable systems using abundant, low-cost zinc and manganese dioxide with a patented doping process introducing copper and bismuth to the anode. This enables reversible reactions, delivering over 5,000 cycles over 10 years with superior longevity, safety, and recyclability. Manufactured in Pearl River, New York, UEP leverages existing alkaline battery infrastructure for cost-effective domestic production.

Products

Modular portfolio includes the Ohm Pod for outdoor energy storage, the Ohm Commercial Rack for scalable indoor applications, and the Ohm Core residential energy storage system (in partnership with Alchemy Industrial) designed to pair with solar panels for home backup and demand cost optimization.

Recent Projects

Installed a 1,000 kWh backup system at the San Diego Supercomputer Center; partnered with Alchemy Industrial in 2024 to launch the Ohm Core residential energy storage; collaborated with Amazon Web Services on edge computing integration; piloted microgrid systems with the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority in rural communities.

Investors

In 2024, Urban Electric Power received $2M in grants from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Long-Duration Energy Storage Demonstration Initiative; grants from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority; and private investments from Baruch Future Ventures and the AWS Clean Energy Accelerator.
