LEAG Clean Power GmbH and Fluence Energy GmbH have started construction of the Heinersbrück GridBattery, a 400 MWh battery energy storage project in Germany. Announced on August 13, 2026, the project will be co-located with wind and solar generation assets on recultivated former mining land and is intended to support the country’s energy transition by strengthening energy security and reducing pressure on the power grid. Completion is scheduled for 2027.

Heinersbrück GridBattery is the second joint project between the two companies. Fluence is also working with LEAG Clean Power on the 1 GW / 4 GWh GigaBattery Jänschwalde 1000 system in the same region of eastern Germany. For both projects, Fluence is responsible for the design, supply, and construction. The systems will use Fluence Smartstack technology, a modular battery storage solution designed for high density, high availability, advanced safety, and easier deployment.

The project is part of LEAG Group’s broader response to Germany’s coal phase-out. The company is repurposing former mining areas, existing industrial sites, and energy infrastructure to develop its GigawattFactory, which combines renewable generation, battery storage, and dispatchable power capacity. LEAG says the approach is meant to support a more flexible and resilient energy system.

Thomas Brandenburg, managing director of LEAG Clean Power GmbH, said the Heinersbrück GridBattery is the first LEAG Clean Power battery storage system to share a grid connection point with wind and photovoltaic assets. He said the setup will allow the company to store surplus renewable electricity and deliver it when needed, improving system efficiency and helping ease grid constraints. Brandenburg also said the company values Fluence’s experience as it develops a battery storage cluster at the Heinersbrück and Jänschwalde sites.

Julian Jansen, managing director for Germany at Fluence, said the Heinersbrück project is the second battery storage system the company is delivering with LEAG Clean Power in the Lusatia region. He added that the project builds on Fluence’s track record in Germany, where it has contracted or deployed 35 projects with more than 6 GWh of cumulative capacity.
