Quinbrook’s Supernode battery energy storage project in Brisbane, Australia, has completed commercial operation for Stage 2 and reached financial close on A$469 million in debt financing for Stage 3. The latest progress adds to the phased development of what is expected to become Australia’s largest operational battery energy storage system campus.

Supernode is planned to exceed 3 GWh of total capacity and is being developed at Brendale, north of Brisbane, next to the South Pine substation. The site is a major node in Queensland’s power system and offers an advantageous marginal loss factor position, along with about 4,000 MW of available connection capacity for future expansion. Across Stages 1, 2, and 3, the project is set to reach 780 MW / 3,074 MWh, with capacity under long-term offtake arrangements.

CATL is serving as the core energy storage system supplier for all three stages of the project. The company has supplied EnerC Plus systems for Stages 1 and 2 and will provide TENER S systems for Stage 3. According to CATL, the approach is intended to support a consistent technology platform across the campus while helping ensure reliable long-term operation, safety, and efficiency.

CATL and Quinbrook also worked together on project-specific design optimization to support high-density deployment within the limits of the available industrial land. The EnerC Plus system is designed for back-to-back installation and is reported to reduce the required site footprint by about 20% compared with EnerC. CATL said its integrated liquid-cooling system is designed to keep the internal container temperature difference within 5°C and to support operation over a 20-year lifecycle.

Beyond equipment supply, CATL will support the asset through a Long-Term Service Agreement that includes condition monitoring, performance tracking, fault response, and preventive maintenance. Quinbrook said the Stage 2 commercial operation milestone and Stage 3 financial close reflect confidence from banking partners in the project and in the broader outlook for battery storage in Australia.

CATL and Quinbrook are also working together on EnerQB, an eight-hour battery storage solution under consideration for future stages of the Supernode development.
