Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) is a global leader in the development and production of advanced lithium-ion batteries and energy storage solutions. Founded in 2011 and headquartered in Ningde, China, CATL has rapidly grown to become the world’s largest manufacturer of electric vehicle (EV) batteries and energy storage systems. With a market share of approximately 37% in EV batteries and 40% in energy storage batteries as of 2023, CATL plays a critical role in the global transition to clean energy and electrification.

The company serves a wide range of industries, including passenger and commercial vehicles, energy storage systems, and industrial applications. Its innovative battery technologies power some of the world’s leading automotive brands, such as BMW, Tesla, Volkswagen, and Toyota. CATL is also committed to sustainability, aiming to achieve carbon neutrality in its core operations by 2025 and across its entire value chain by 2035. Through its focus on research and development, strategic partnerships, and global expansion, CATL continues to shape the future of energy storage and electric mobility.

Battery Technology

CATL specializes in lithium-ion battery technology, with a strong emphasis on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, which are known for their safety, longevity, and cost-effectiveness. The company has pioneered the cell-to-pack (CTP) method, a manufacturing innovation that increases the volume utilization of battery packs by 15-20%, doubles production efficiency, and reduces the number of components by 40%. This approach significantly enhances energy density, making CATL’s batteries more efficient and competitive in the market.

In 2022, CATL introduced its third-generation CTP technology, known as the Qilin Battery, which delivers 13% more power than comparable batteries like Tesla’s 4680 battery. The Qilin Battery combines different chemical systems to optimize performance and cost, making it a versatile solution for both EVs and energy storage applications.

CATL is also advancing sodium-ion battery technology, with its second-generation sodium-ion battery expected to enter the market in 2025. This new battery offers higher energy density, superior low-temperature performance, and enhanced safety, making it suitable for a wide range of applications, including EVs and large-scale energy storage systems.

Additionally, CATL provides advanced battery management systems (BMS) that ensure the safety, reliability, and efficiency of its products. The company’s focus on innovation extends to battery recycling, where it promotes a circular economy by recovering valuable materials from used batteries.

Recent Projects

In recent years, CATL has launched several notable projects and technologies. One of the most significant is the introduction of its second-generation sodium-ion battery, which is expected to hit the market in 2025. This battery features an energy density exceeding 200 Wh/kg, excellent low-temperature performance, and improved safety, making it a promising alternative to traditional lithium-ion batteries.

CATL has also expanded its offerings in swappable batteries, launching two types of standard swappable batteries in lithium iron phosphate and ternary chemical systems. These batteries support endurance ranges of 400 to 600 kilometers and are part of CATL’s plan to build 1,000 battery swap stations by 2025.

Another recent highlight is the launch of the TENER Flex, a flexible energy storage solution, and the TECTRANS battery system, designed for the electrification of commercial vehicles. These innovations underscore CATL’s commitment to advancing energy storage and EV technologies.

Investors

CATL has attracted significant investment from a diverse group of global and domestic investors. Notable investors include China Pacific Insurance, Barclays Bank, Bosera Funds, HSBC, J.P. Morgan, and Morgan Stanley. The company has also engaged with sovereign wealth funds and other global investors to raise funds for its expansion efforts.

In addition to financial institutions, CATL has received support from strategic partners such as Porsche Ventures, which has launched a renminbi-denominated fund to invest in Chinese EV and smart mobility companies. These investments reflect the confidence of the global financial and automotive industries in CATL’s leadership and innovation capabilities.

Locations

CATL operates 13 battery manufacturing plants worldwide, with facilities in China, Japan, France, Germany, and Hungary. The company’s global presence and strategic partnerships enable it to serve a wide range of markets and industries, solidifying its position as a key player in the global energy transition.
