Company Overview

H.C. Starck Tungsten Powders, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Materials Corporation, is a global leader in tungsten-based materials with over 100 years of expertise. Headquartered in Goslar, Germany, it designs, produces, and supplies high-performance tungsten powders, oxides, carbides, and specialty compounds for automotive, aerospace, medical technology, and energy exploration.

Battery Technology

H.C. Starck advances battery technologies through specialty tungsten powders. Its starck2charge® line enhances lithium-ion battery stability, safety, and charging efficiency by mitigating gas generation in cathodes. In partnership with Germany’s Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research (ZSW), it develops tungsten-based cathode coatings for faster charging and higher energy density. In anodes, its 15% stake in Nyobolt supports tungsten-doped materials for ultra-fast charging. Its starck2print® powders enable precise additive manufacturing and closed-loop recycling via recovery of tungsten from print waste. Planned large-scale lithium-ion recycling plant in Germany’s Harz region underscores its sustainable production and environmental compliance.

Products

Offers ultrafine to coarse tungsten powders, oxides, carbides, and specialty compounds, including starck2charge® for battery enhancement and starck2print® for additive manufacturing. These products feature tailored grain sizes, high flowability, precise particle distribution, thermal resistance, and durability, meeting stringent industry standards.

Recent Projects

Planning a lithium-ion battery recycling facility in Germany (early 2025) supported by public and industrial funding. Ongoing collaboration with Nyobolt on tungsten-based anodes for next-gen batteries. Partnerships with ChemiLytics GmbH for raw material processing and research initiatives with ZSW to optimize cathode coatings. Continual refinement of proprietary recycling technology for tungsten recovery from byproducts and scrap.

Investors

H.C. Starck Tungsten Powders has been owned by Mitsubishi Materials Corporation since December 2024, following prior acquisitions by Advent International, Carlyle Group, and Masan High-Tech Materials. MMC’s strategic investment builds on its 10.0% stake in Masan and includes equity in Nyobolt to support emerging battery technologies.
