Ion’s core technology is a solid-state lithium metal battery featuring a patented anodeless design and a 3D ceramic structure serving as both separator and protective layer to prevent dendrite growth and self-discharge. It uses a nonflammable solid-state electrolyte, operates without external compression, eliminates thermal runaway risk, achieves over 800 cycles with minimal degradation, and is compatible with various cathode materials.
Solid-state lithium metal battery cells employing an anodeless, compressionless design with a 3D ceramic separator and nonflammable electrolyte. Key features include high energy density, fast charging, long cycle life (800+ cycles), enhanced safety, and compatibility with diverse cathode chemistries, suitable for EVs, consumer electronics, aerospace, defense, and grid storage.
In 2024, Ion commissioned a large-scale solid-state battery manufacturing facility in Beltsville, Maryland, with initial capacity of 1 MWh, planned to scale to 10 MWh by 2025 and 500 MWh by 2028, creating skilled manufacturing jobs and bolstering Maryland’s clean energy industry.
