Company Overview

IONWAY is a strategic collaboration between PowerCo (Volkswagen Group’s battery company) and Umicore, established in 2023 to produce sustainable battery materials for electric vehicles. Headquartered in Brussels, Belgium, it aims to achieve a 160 GWh annual production capacity by 2030 to power approximately 2.2 million EVs and strengthen Europe’s EV supply chain.

Battery Technology

IONWAY manufactures cathode active materials (CAM) and precursors (pCAM) for EV batteries, emphasizing green energy usage and responsible raw material sourcing. Its state-of-the-art production processes integrate advanced technical specifications and stringent quality control, with future plans to incorporate refining and battery recycling for a closed-loop production cycle.

Products

Cathode active materials (CAM) and cathode precursor materials (pCAM) designed to meet performance, cost, and environmental requirements for PowerCo’s European battery cell factories.

Recent Projects

In 2024 IONWAY began construction of its first CAM production facility in Nysa, Poland, backed by €350 million in Polish government grants. The facility is projected to create 900 jobs by 2030, and a location for a future pCAM plant is under evaluation.

Investors

Founded and funded by PowerCo (Volkswagen Group) and Umicore with up to €1.7B investment through 2030, with additional project support from Polish government grants.
