Molicel, officially known as E-One Moli Energy Corporation, is a long-standing global provider of high-performance rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. The company was established as E-One Moli Energy Corporation in 1998, building upon the legacy of Moli Energy Ltd., which was founded in Canada in 1977. This history makes Molicel one of the most experienced companies in the lithium battery industry.
Molicel specializes in advanced cylindrical lithium-ion cells, renowned for their ultra-high power output and high energy density. These batteries serve numerous demanding industries, including electric vehicles, energy storage systems, power tools, motorsports, aerospace, medical devices, and consumer electronics. As a member of the Taiwan Cement Corporation (TCC) Group, Molicel’s operations are integrated into a broader industrial conglomerate that includes activities in power generation, renewable energy, and battery energy storage.
Battery Technology
Molicel’s battery technology centers on developing ultra-high power lithium-ion cells optimized for demanding applications. These cells are engineered to provide high continuous discharge rates, such as up to 45A in certain models like the 21700 P42A, allowing for significant power delivery. Fast charging is another core capability, with cells supporting 3C fast charge cycles and even ultrafast 5C charging in newer generations.
The technology also emphasizes thermal and operating stability, with cells capable of performing in temperatures as low as -40°C and enhanced thermal management for safety. Molicel cells offer a good cycle life, typically over 300 cycles for certain models, paired with low self-discharge for extended use. The company produces cylindrical cells in standard formats, including 21700 and 18650, with the P50B 21700 cell demonstrating an energy density of up to 260 Wh/kg and peak power of 413 W. Molicel also offers battery modules configurable for various application needs.
Recent Projects
In May 2025, Molicel announced the S Series, a line of ultra-high power cells designed for data centers, AI computing, and Battery Backup Units (BBUs). These cells prioritize safety with low flammability, offer a calendar life exceeding 6 years, and provide over 1.5 minutes of backup time. They are compliant with Open Compute Project (OCP) ORV3 standards and are available in 18650 and 21700 formats, capable of significant power output.
Also in May 2025, Molicel partnered with OCSiAl, a specialist in single wall carbon nanotubes, to improve anode and cathode conductivity. This collaboration has contributed to innovations like the INR-21700-P50B power cell, which offers high energy density and fast charging capabilities. Molicel is also working with Group14 Technologies, focusing on incorporating silicon into anodes to achieve higher power density, quicker charge times, and improved longevity compared to some existing battery types.
