Chinese automaker BYD has announced plans to unveil its second-generation blade battery and new flash-charging technology on March 5 at an event in Shenzhen. The enhancements are positioned as a key driver for reinvigorating demand after the company reported six consecutive months of year-on-year sales declines.

BYD shared the teaser on its Weibo account, hinting that the upcoming technologies would “once again change the world with technology.” While specific technical details remain under wraps, the company has been observed rolling out megawatt-level fast-charging stations featuring a distinctive cyan exterior and T-shaped structural design. Industry observers expect the new battery and charger to push performance boundaries in range, power, and charging speed.

The ultra-luxury sub-brand Yangwang confirmed that its 2026 U7 sedan will be the first model to adopt the second-generation blade battery. Equipped with a 150-kWh pack, the U7 is claimed to deliver a pure electric range of up to 1,006 kilometers on a single charge. According to Hu Xiaoqing, general manager of Yangwang’s sales division, the new system addresses the “impossible triangle” by simultaneously offering high horsepower, extended range, and rapid charging.

In addition to the U7, Yangwang will introduce the U8 and U8L models at the same event. Several other BYD models are also slated for debut, including the Dynasty-series Datang SUV and an updated Denza Z9GT. These launches come after BYD’s March 2025 introduction of its first-generation blade battery in 2020 and a subsequent megawatt flash-charging system that could add 400 kilometers of range in five minutes.

Faced with a 41% year-on-year sales drop in February—partly attributed to Chinese New Year seasonal effects and policy adjustments—BYD is betting on disruptive battery and charging innovations to regain momentum in both domestic and international markets.
