Recyclus Group is the United Kingdom’s first industrial-scale lithium-ion battery recycler, established in 2019 to support the transition to a zero-carbon economy. The company specializes in recovering critical raw materials from end-of-life lithium-ion batteries, facilitating a circular supply chain for battery metals. Recyclus operates its primary recycling facility in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, which is the UK’s first industrial-scale plant dedicated to lithium-ion battery recycling.
Headquartered in London, Recyclus Group plays a key role in developing the UK’s domestic battery recycling capacity. By processing batteries from various sectors, including automotive, e-mobility, and consumer electronics, the company provides a necessary service for managing battery waste responsibly and sustainably. Recyclus’s focus on advanced recycling technologies positions it as a significant player in the evolving battery value chain.
Battery Technology
Recyclus Group employs proprietary, in-house engineered recycling technology to process all types of lithium-ion batteries, regardless of their chemistry or condition. The company’s method is designed to be eco-friendly and efficient. The recycling process involves collection and delivery of batteries, followed by mechanical shredding in an inert nitrogen atmosphere to prevent adverse reactions. This is a waterless and low-energy approach, aligning with sustainable practices.
After shredding, the process isolates and removes the electrolyte using a unique drying system. Ferrous metals are separated magnetically, and the remaining material is processed to produce “black mass,” a concentrate rich in valuable critical metals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and manganese. Further processing separates non-ferrous metals, plastics, and polymers. Recyclus is also developing recycling techniques for lithium thionyl chloride batteries, addressing another area of battery waste.
To ensure safe handling and transport of batteries, Recyclus developed the LiBox, a patented container designed to contain thermal events. These units are used across various sectors, including government and automotive.
Recent Projects
In April 2025, Recyclus Group secured its largest contract to date, a 12-month agreement with a global industrial group valued at up to £2 million. This contract involves recycling end-of-life lithium-ion batteries at the Wolverhampton facility.
Early in 2025, the company also began processing hundreds of EV battery packs associated with automotive recalls, demonstrating its capability to handle large-scale battery volumes from the automotive sector.
By September 2024, Recyclus had recycled 4,000 lithium-ion battery modules for a major industry participant. These recent projects illustrate the company’s operational growth and increasing engagement with key sectors requiring battery recycling solutions.
Investors
Recyclus Group receives significant support from Technology Minerals Plc, a company focused on circular battery metal economies, which holds a 48.35% ownership stake and is involved in management.
The company is also engaged in a £3 million Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS)-qualifying fundraising round to support operational expansion. Recyclus has received grant funding, including a £50,000 award from the Clean Futures Accelerator program. Oberon Investments manages fundraising efforts, and Gracechurch Group handles public relations.
