TERRAE GmbH is a German provider of premium cylindrical battery cells, specializing in both Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) and Sodium-Ion (Na-ion) battery technologies. Owned by Sven Bauer, Co-Founder & CEO of BMZ Group, TERRAE operates as the battery cell technology brand within the BMZ Group’s ecosystem. The company focuses on developing and supplying advanced battery cells designed for various applications, including electric vehicles, energy storage systems, and industrial tools. TERRAE’s approach integrates meticulous cell development with strong supply chain management, ensuring high-quality products that meet stringent German production standards. TERRAE aims to contribute to a sustainable future by offering reliable and efficient battery solutions.
Battery Technology
TERRAE provides advanced battery cell technologies in both Li-ion and Na-ion chemistries. For Li-ion, the company offers cylindrical formats, including the well-known 18650 type, and others customizable to client needs. These cells incorporate chemistries like NMC/NCA for high energy density and LFP for enhanced safety and cycle life, suitable for EVs, energy storage, and industrial applications. TERRAE’s Li-ion cells are designed for high discharge currents and extended lifetimes, with a guaranteed minimum lifespan of 10 years.
A significant development is the Sodium-Ion (Na-ion) technology. Introduced in prototypes in 2024, these Na-ion cells are designed for industrial and home energy storage, as well as industrial vehicles where extreme energy density is not critical. Na-ion technology offers a cost-effective, abundant, and safer alternative, addressing supply chain concerns for raw materials. Series production for Na-ion cells in cylindrical and prismatic formats is planned from mid-2025. TERRAE also develops unique cell architectures to boost energy density and performance, achieving up to 60% more energy efficiency in some designs.
Recent Projects
In 2024, TERRAE unveiled its “NaTe” Sodium-ion cell technology. Prototypes of these new cells, available in 26700 and 32140 formats, are presently undergoing testing. This marks a strategic move into sodium-ion battery production, with series availability anticipated from mid-2025. This initiative underscores TERRAE’s dedication to broadening its product offerings and addressing market demand for alternative battery chemistries. Furthermore, TERRAE continues to enhance its Li-ion cell portfolio, including the INR 21700 62E cell, focusing on improved performance, capacity, and longevity through advanced material enhancements and cell architecture refinements.
