TraWeBa (Transformations-HUB Wertschöpfungskette Batterie) is a national German initiative driving sustainable innovation across the automotive battery value chain. Launched in 2022 and running through December 2025, the project unites industry, academia, and SMEs to advance production, recycling, and digital solutions for clean energy transitions.
Funded by the German government under the Bundesbatterieprojekt, it focuses on scaling sustainable practices—from raw material sourcing to end-of-life reuse—while lowering emissions and dependency on imported resources.
The initiative aims to strengthen Europe’s competitiveness in electrification by bridging gaps between research and industry, while reducing its ecological footprint. Its digital platforms and pilot programs also enable SMEs to tap into emerging markets for battery technology and circular systems.

Funding Partners and Support Structure
TraWeBa secures resources through federal grants and collaborative networks. Its primary backer is the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, with oversight provided by administrative coordinator ACOD GmbH. Support also comes from industry participants like KNIPEX and the Automotive Agency of Lower Saxony, which supply technical expertise and facilities.
Key academic collaborators—including Fraunhofer Institutes (FFB, IKTS, IPT, ISI)—specialize in production engineering and material science, while platforms like Circular Valley® provide recycling expertise. These alliances enable TraWeBa to test prototypes faster and share knowledge via whitepapers and events, avoiding siloed research.
