Wontai Power Co., Ltd. is a Shanghai-based technology company specializing in vanadium flow battery (VFB) energy storage systems. The company focuses on independent research and development (R&D), production, sales, and service of these advanced battery solutions. Wontai was established with global carbon reduction goals in mind, aiming to contribute to the worldwide transition to cleaner and sustainable energy sources.

Strategically located to benefit from the integration of the Yangtze River Delta and the G60 Science and Innovation Corridor, Wontai Power employs a forward-looking product development approach. This involves continuously optimizing current product performance, reducing costs, and accelerating the iteration of VFB technology to meet increasing market needs. The company’s operations span the full vanadium flow battery industrial chain, from raw material processing to system integration and project deployment.

Battery Technology

Wontai Power’s core technology is the all-vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB), a type of liquid flow battery that charges and discharges through the valence changes of vanadium ions. This technology is recognized for several advantages. It uses an inherently safe electrolyte, which is non-flammable and environmentally friendly, with no pollution during production or usage, and the electrolyte is recyclable. Reactor components are primarily carbon materials, resulting in negligible pollutant emission upon disposal, mainly carbon dioxide.

VFBs offer a long service life and high salvage value, contributing to lower energy storage costs over the system’s lifespan. Their modular system design allows for scalability to meet various energy demands. From a sustainability perspective, vanadium is abundant, with China holding substantial reserves, ensuring a consistent supply of electrolyte raw materials.

Wontai enhances this technology through proprietary improvements, including advanced electrode materials, high-performance proton exchange membranes, and innovative bipolar plate designs, which collectively improve efficiency, durability, and cost-effectiveness. The company occupies a critical position along the vanadium flow battery industrial chain, covering raw material acquisition, electrolyte production, core stack and module manufacturing, and system integration.

Recent Projects

Recent developments include the Guazhou Wind Project, where a 100MW wind farm was coupled with a 15MW/60MWh vanadium flow battery system, commissioned in January 2025. This installation incorporates advanced VFB stacks designed for increased power density and grid stability, projected to reduce annual carbon emissions by 330,000 tons. In April 2025, Wontai initiated the construction of a 100MW/600MWh manufacturing base in Gansu, a substantial facility intended to support large-scale VFB production. The company is also working on a 140MW/560MWh shared energy storage project in Jinta County, designed to enhance local grid reliability and flexibility.
