AESC has commenced mass production of its new 46120 large cylindrical batteries at its manufacturing facility, supporting BMW Group’s upcoming Neue Klasse electric vehicle platform. The 46120 cell format measures 46 mm in diameter and 120 mm in length, delivering approximately 106 Ah per cell with a volumetric energy density exceeding 300 Wh per liter. Featuring a nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) cathode paired with a graphite-silicon composite anode, the cells offer low internal resistance for enhanced fast-charging capability and a cycle life exceeding 1,000 cycles at 90% depth of discharge.

Mass production is enabled by AESC’s automated electrode coating and cell assembly lines, which include advanced in-line quality controls and a proprietary dry electrode process to reduce solvent usage. The current production line can deliver more than 300,000 cells per month, with plans to ramp up output as BMW Group scales its Neue Klasse production from 2025. Designed for an 800-volt system architecture, the 46120 cells support charging rates up to 6C, allowing drivers to achieve an 80% state of charge in under 15 minutes under optimal conditions.

This launch follows the strategic partnership agreement signed by AESC and BMW Group in 2022 to jointly develop next-generation battery solutions. The new cylindrical format will be integrated into modules and battery packs optimized for thermal management, safety, and recyclability. AESC is also advancing sustainable practices throughout its supply chain, including sourcing low-carbon materials and implementing a closed-loop recycling program to recover valuable metals at end of life.

By adding large cylindrical cells to its established pouch portfolio, AESC aims to strengthen its position in the global electric vehicle battery market. The collaboration with BMW Group highlights both companies’ commitment to advancing e-mobility, improving driving range, charging convenience, and overall vehicle performance.
