Anthro Energy Breaks Ground on Kentucky Electrolyte Plant
Anthro Energy has started construction on a Louisville, Kentucky facility that it says will be the first U.S.-owned advanced electrolyte plant. The site is expected to produce 12,000 metric tons yearly and support up to 25 GWh of batteries.

Anthro Energy has broken ground on what it says will be the first U.S.-owned and operated advanced electrolyte manufacturing facility in the United States, with construction beginning in Louisville, Kentucky. The project represents the company’s first commercial-scale manufacturing site and is intended to support domestic battery manufacturing and strengthen the U.S. supply chain for critical battery materials.

When the facility is expected to begin operations in late 2027, Anthro says it will produce approximately 12,000 metric tons of advanced polymer electrolyte per year. The company said that output would be enough to support up to 25 GWh of lithium-ion battery production for use in defense, consumer electronics, mobility, robotics, and energy storage systems. After construction is complete, Anthro expects to begin occupying and commissioning the facility immediately.

The project is expected to create about 110 full-time manufacturing and technical jobs, along with nearly 390 construction jobs during the buildout. Anthro said the groundbreaking follows authorization from the U.S. Department of Energy to move the project into full execution, after the company received a $24.9 million award under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and $18.4 million in investment tax credits through the Inflation Reduction Act’s 48C Advanced Energy Project Tax Credit Program.

Anthro’s proprietary Anthro Proteus platform is designed to replace conventional liquid electrolytes with phase-change polymer electrolytes. According to the company, the technology is intended to improve battery safety, increase energy density, and provide greater design flexibility while remaining compatible with existing lithium-ion manufacturing infrastructure. Anthro said the Kentucky facility will use foreign entity of concern-free inputs from day one, supporting a domestic source for one of the battery industry’s key materials.

The company also said the project will support workforce development efforts in Louisville and Jefferson County through partnerships with organizations and educational institutions including Kentucky FAME, Jefferson Community and Technical College, KentuckianaWorks, Kentucky Valor, and Fort Campbell.
