Asahi Kasei Corp. announced on August 20, 2026, that it has developed a new lithium pre-doping technology for high-voltage lithium-ion batteries with silicon-based anodes. The company said the approach is designed to increase energy density and reduce cost by enabling lithium carbonate to function as an additional lithium source at lower voltages. This is intended to reduce the permanent capacity loss that typically occurs in silicon-rich cells during the first charge and discharge cycle.
The development comes as demand rises for batteries with higher energy density for electric vehicles and humanoid robots. In response to these needs, battery developers have increasingly focused on partially replacing graphite with silicon-based materials in the anode and raising the operating voltage of cathode materials. However, silicon-based anodes are known to suffer significant irreversible capacity loss during initial charging, which can limit battery life and overall energy density. Addressing this issue often requires more cathode active material, which increases material usage and cost.
Asahi Kasei said it focused on lithium carbonate as a lower-cost material with an established track record in lithium-ion battery applications. The company noted that lithium carbonate has traditionally been difficult to use for pre-doping because its decomposition voltage is well above the normal operating range of lithium-ion batteries. Its new technology uses special electrolyte additives to promote the decomposition of lithium carbonate at typical cell voltages used in standard lithium-ion batteries.
In this process, lithium carbonate is added to the cathode as a sacrificial lithium source and decomposes during the initial charge to supply lithium. The company said internal tests using an NMC cell with an anode composed of 90% graphite and 10% silicon oxide showed a 10% increase in energy density. Asahi Kasei also said the technology improves cycle life at a low cost per watt-hour and can be applied without major changes to existing battery manufacturing lines.
The company plans to work with customers worldwide on proof-of-concept evaluations and intends to license the technology through flexible collaboration frameworks. Asahi Kasei said this effort is part of its medium-term management plan and Technology-value Business Creation initiative.
