Asahi Kasei has announced the development of a new lithium pre-doping technology designed to improve the performance of silicon-rich lithium-ion batteries. The company said the approach is intended to raise energy density while also lowering costs, addressing two of the most important requirements in battery development for electric vehicles and other mobility applications.

Silicon-rich battery chemistries are drawing increasing attention because silicon can store significantly more lithium than conventional graphite-based anodes, creating the potential for higher battery capacity. At the same time, these cells have faced technical and commercial challenges, including cost pressures and the need to maintain practical performance at scale. Asahi Kasei’s pre-doping technology is aimed at supporting this next stage of battery development.

The company positioned the technology as a way to help advance next-generation lithium-ion batteries without sacrificing the balance between performance and manufacturability. By focusing on higher energy density, the process could contribute to extended driving range in electric vehicles or improved runtime in energy storage applications, while lower material or processing costs could support broader commercialization.
