BYD’s energy storage division has signed an 11.275 GWh agreement with the UAE’s Masdar to support Masdar’s Round The Clock project in Abu Dhabi, marking another major expansion in the Middle East. The deal follows BYD’s recent success in Saudi Arabia, where it secured a 12.5 GWh grid-side energy storage contract—the largest of its kind globally.
Jointly led by Masdar and Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), the Round The Clock initiative is the world’s first gigawatt-scale, 24-hour renewable energy project and is described as the largest and most advanced solar-plus-storage installation.
By integrating photovoltaic generation with high-capacity energy storage, the project will address renewable intermittency while delivering around-the-clock clean electricity. Once fully commissioned, the facility is expected to provide stable gigawatt-scale baseload power at highly competitive rates, further strengthening the UAE’s position in the global renewable energy sector.
According to BYD, the project’s scalable design could serve as a benchmark for similar round-the-clock renewable power projects worldwide. To support the project, BYD will supply its Haohan energy storage system, featuring the 2,710 Ah Blade Battery. The battery cell increases single-cell capacity by more than 300% while reducing the complexity of battery management systems by 70–80%.
The Haohan system provides a minimum unit capacity of 14.5 MWh and can accommodate a 10 MWh module within a standard 20-foot container, reducing both the installation footprint and enclosure requirements. Designed for harsh desert environments, the system operates across a wide temperature range of -30°C to 55°C and carries an IP66 protection rating.
In addition, BYD will provide its GC Master EMS energy management system, capable of connecting tens of millions of data points, increasing computing power by more than 400%, and managing single-station capacities exceeding 15 GWh. This agreement further expands BYD’s growing international energy storage portfolio, which also includes partnerships on a 2.4 GWh project in Poland and a 288.6 MWh installation in Hungary.
Since launching its energy storage business in 2008, BYD has deployed major projects across more than 110 countries and regions.
