CATL provided the update in an October 27 response to investor questions on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange’s Hudongyi platform. Its solid-state battery development team has more than 1,000 people, and the program targets an energy density of about 500 Wh/kg. CATL has not confirmed this figure as a production-cell specification or disclosed trial output, automotive customers or a related vehicle launch date.

Several technical and manufacturing issues remain to be demonstrated, including durability, production yield, cost, safety and performance under real operating conditions. CATL Chairman Robin Zeng previously rated the company’s solid-state technology at Level 4 on a nine-level readiness scale.

For sulfide-based cells, maintaining stable contact between solid components is a key challenge because electrodes expand and contract during charging and discharging. Cell designs must manage contact pressure and interface resistance. Sulfide materials also require protection from moisture because reactions can release toxic hydrogen sulfide gas. The targeted energy density may require higher-capacity anode architectures, such as lithium-metal or anode-less designs, but CATL has not disclosed the configuration used in its latest samples.

Other battery manufacturers have set separate commercialization timelines. Toyota and Idemitsu are aiming to commercialize sulfide-based all-solid-state batteries for battery-electric vehicles between 2027 and 2028, while Samsung SDI has targeted mass production in the second half of 2027. The milestones do not indicate equivalent production volumes, market timing or performance.

Unlike semi-solid and hybrid batteries, which retain some liquid electrolyte, all-solid-state cells use a solid electrolyte. CATL’s next challenge is to translate its current development work into repeatable production at a commercially viable cost.
