On April 27, 2026, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) and HyperStrong formalized a strategic cooperation agreement for sodium-ion battery supply aimed at energy storage projects in Ningde, Fujian. Under this three-year partnership, HyperStrong will receive up to 60 GWh of sodium-ion batteries, constituting the largest supply contract in the sector to date and supporting the large-scale roll-out of sodium-ion technology.

As CATL’s first strategic partner in sodium-ion energy storage, HyperStrong will collaborate closely on research and development, product applications, and project deployments. CATL has achieved full value-chain integration for mass production of sodium-ion batteries, addressing key manufacturing challenges such as hard carbon foaming and moisture control through advanced techniques including angstrom-level pore structure regulation, surface molecular water-locking, and adaptive dynamic formation. These innovations have improved energy density and ensured consistency across high-volume production.

Sodium-ion batteries are noted for their adaptability across a wide temperature range, lower heat generation during cycling, and reduced cell expansion stress, which together enhance safety and stability. In long-duration energy storage systems, these batteries can simplify system architectures, reduce auxiliary energy losses, and improve overall plant efficiency and economic performance. Additionally, CATL’s platform-based design shares the same form factor as its lithium-ion counterparts, facilitating compatibility with existing manufacturing processes and reducing integration costs and timelines.

This 60 GWh cooperation agreement marks a significant milestone for both companies and underscores a new phase of large-scale development in the global sodium-ion battery industry. Over the course of the agreement, CATL and HyperStrong plan to deepen their collaboration, advance the energy storage market, and provide resilient and diversified technological solutions to support the global energy transition.
