Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) announced on October 28, 2026, that it signed a memorandum of understanding with German energy storage solutions provider Intilion to deploy 3 GWh of sodium-ion energy storage systems in Europe over the next five years. The companies plan to introduce CATL’s Tener Sodium system in Germany, Switzerland and Austria for grid-scale, commercial and industrial applications.

The agreement extends an existing project partnership between the companies to sodium-ion technology. CATL said the partners have deployed more than 30 energy storage projects in Germany since 2022 and will promote wider use of both sodium-ion and lithium-ion battery technologies across Europe.

Designed for harsh European winter conditions, Tener Sodium offers more than 15,000 cycles and 25 years of stable operation while maintaining high discharge power at -20°C (-4°F), according to CATL. The company said these characteristics can support grid frequency regulation and the long-term stability of storage systems.

CATL unveiled Tener Sodium on June 22, describing it as the world’s first field-validated sodium-ion energy storage solution. Its modular design allows storage duration to be configured for individual projects. The system is dimensionally compatible with lithium-ion batteries, which CATL said provides customers with more flexibility in selecting battery technologies and reduces exposure to lithium price volatility.

The MOU follows other European agreements. In July, CATL signed an MOU with Alfen N.V. for 5 GWh of sodium-ion systems in Western Europe, including the Netherlands, starting in 2027. That same month, CATL signed a 2 GWh Tener Sodium cooperation agreement with Solarpro. In April, it signed a three-year supply agreement with HyperStrong for 60 GWh of sodium-ion batteries in China.

Europe’s lithium-ion energy storage battery shipments reached 72.7 GWh in the first half of 2026, up 74% year-on-year, according to SNE Research. Over the same period, CATL’s global lithium-ion energy storage battery shipments rose 81% to 125.0 GWh, giving it a 27.1% market share.
