Glendale, WI – On November 12, 2025, Clarios, a global leader in low-voltage energy storage solutions, announced the acquisition of Maxwell Technologies, a manufacturer of supercapacitor cells and modules used in mobility, grid stabilization, data centers and onsite power applications. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
By adding supercapacitor technology to its portfolio, Clarios aims to enhance its offering of high-performance, short-duration energy storage solutions. Supercapacitors differ from conventional batteries by charging and discharging almost instantly, making them well suited for capturing excess energy and supporting critical systems during sudden demand peaks. These devices can sustain up to one million charge-discharge cycles, operate across extreme temperatures (–40 °C/ –40 °F to +65 °C/ 149 °F), and require minimal maintenance without the need for fire-risk mitigation.
The acquisition is expected to bolster Clarios’ supply-chain stability for both U.S. and global original-equipment customers, while complementing its established leadership in battery circularity and low-voltage energy solutions. Maxwell Technologies brings more than three decades of innovation in supercapacitor systems, having shipped over 85 million cells worldwide. Its products have been deployed in U.S. energy generation projects, grid applications, automotive and transportation systems, and industrial automation.
“Maxwell’s supercapacitors are designed to provide customers with high-power energy storage solutions that emphasize reliability, safety, and long life,” said Mark Wallace, CEO of Clarios. “This integration strengthens our ability to serve our automotive customers and creates a long-term opportunity to expand our presence in non-automotive sectors. Maxwell’s existing customer relationships in Data Centers, Grid, Military and Industrial applications will be maintained and actively developed under Clarios’ leadership.”
Following the closing, Maxwell Technologies will operate as an independent U.S.-based business unit within Clarios. This structure is intended to preserve Maxwell’s specialized expertise while enabling Clarios to leverage its global manufacturing and recycling network.
