Eni Storage Systems has begun construction at the Versalis industrial site in Brindisi to establish a new integrated hub for the production of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells and modules. The joint venture between Eni Industrial Evolution and FIB (Seri Industrial Group) aims to support the expanding European market for stationary Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). These systems play a critical role in stabilizing electricity grids by storing excess power generated from renewable sources and delivering it when demand is high. European demand for BESS is projected to increase from 36 GWh in 2025 to approximately 138 GWh by 2030.
The project will be executed in multiple phases. The first phase focuses on constructing a gigafactory in Brindisi for battery cell and module production, alongside a dedicated assembly plant for BESS units. This assembly facility will be capable of integrating battery modules supplied by both the Brindisi gigafactory and Seri Industrial’s plant in Teverola, in the province of Caserta. In the second phase, the Brindisi site will incorporate facilities for producing LFP cathode active material and for recycling used batteries, supplying both regional gigafactories and supporting circular economy objectives.
Total production capacity is expected to reach 16 GWh per year by 2030, split evenly between Brindisi and Teverola. This output is equivalent to more than 10% of the projected European market for stationary energy storage by the end of the decade. Italy’s Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy attended the groundbreaking ceremony, underscoring the project’s strategic importance.
Eni’s Chief Operating Officer for Industrial Transformation noted that the initiative represents the company’s entry into a business sector with significant growth potential, reinforcing local value creation, employment, and energy security while advancing decarbonization goals. The Chief Executive Officer of Seri Industrial and FAENIX highlighted the project’s potential to drive economic development in Brindisi and support Italy’s broader industrial transformation efforts.
