Forge Nano has entered into a strategic partnership with Samsung SDI to develop a 3-gigawatt-hour-per-year battery cell manufacturing facility in Morrisville, North Carolina, with production expected to begin in 2028. Under the agreement, Samsung SDI will provide operational and manufacturing expertise to help establish high-throughput production at the new gigafactory. Once operational, the facility will produce Samsung SDI cells alongside Forge Nano’s existing Atomic Armor™ cell products.
In parallel, Samsung SDI has signed a conditional procurement agreement to purchase battery cells manufactured at the Morrisville site starting in 2028. Forge Nano will also serve as an authorized U.S. distributor for Samsung SDI cells, supplying domestic defense, industrial and other non-consumer automotive markets that require secure, locally produced battery technology.
Forge Nano is investing between $300 million and $330 million in the North Carolina gigafactory, supported by a $100 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. The investment will fund facility construction, process development and integration of Samsung SDI’s manufacturing know-how. The plant is designed to bolster U.S. battery cell production capacity and strengthen domestic supply chains for critical applications.
This collaboration represents a first-of-its-kind alliance between a U.S. battery technology firm and a tier-one global cell manufacturer on American soil. By combining Forge Nano’s expertise in atomic layer deposition (ALD) and advanced surface-coating technology with Samsung SDI’s cell production experience, both companies aim to accelerate the availability of high-performance, domestically manufactured battery cells.
The Morrisville gigafactory is expected to play a key role in meeting growing demand for advanced battery cells in defense and industrial markets. Forge Nano’s Atomic Armor™ platform enables nano-scale coatings that enhance cell performance and longevity, while Samsung SDI’s production support is intended to optimize throughput and quality. Together, the partners seek to mitigate scale-up risk and deliver secure, high-performance battery supply for critical U.S. infrastructure.
