Geely Auto has launched Geely Technology Europe, a new research and development hub that unites the company’s engineering teams in Sweden and Germany. Announced on March 26, 2026, this European division is designed to accelerate global vehicle development and narrow the launch gap between China and other markets to under six months.
Building on its R&D presence in Europe since 2013—when Geely partnered with Volvo to establish a development center in Gothenburg—the new hub will work closely with the Geely Research Institute in China. Together, they will co-develop vehicle platforms from the outset with global specifications in mind, ensuring that product designs meet diverse regional requirements without extensive redesign.
“Europe is more than a key market; it is a global benchmark for automotive excellence,” said Giovanni Lanfranchi, CEO of Geely Technology Europe. “This borderless R&D setup gives us a strategic advantage to both meet and help define global standards.”
Geely Technology Europe will serve as the primary center for vehicle architecture, software development, and regulatory compliance across Geely’s brands, including Zeekr, Lynk & Co, and Geely itself. The organization has outlined plans to double its Europe-led vehicle projects by 2027, focusing on three core areas: global architecture co-development; market-specific product optimization; and AI-powered digital experiences, such as advanced driver assistance systems and smart cockpit interfaces.
Earlier in March, Geely Auto Group’s advanced driver assistance system, G-ASD, received UN R171 certification from European testing authorities, a necessary step for deploying the technology in European markets. This milestone follows the December 2025 opening of the world’s largest automotive safety testing facility in Hangzhou Bay, China, which leveraged Volvo’s safety expertise to advance Geely’s global technology roadmap.
By consolidating its European R&D footprint, Geely aims to streamline regulatory approvals and technical validation, ultimately reducing time-to-market and enhancing its competitiveness in the rapidly evolving electric and intelligent vehicle landscape.
