FAW Group’s luxury division Hongqi, in partnership with Lishen Battery, has successfully completed charging performance tests at 25°C for its newly developed ultra-fast charging battery. The cell reached 10% to 70% state of charge (SOC) in just 3 minutes 41 seconds, and 10% to 97% SOC in 8 minutes 3 seconds, indicating a peak charging rate of 12C.

Engineers attribute the rapid charge capability to several innovations. A high-efficiency ultra-fast charging anode and a proprietary low-desolvation-energy electrolyte work together to reduce lithium-ion migration barriers. Composite carbon source coatings and bulk doping modifications cut internal resistance by around 15% compared with similar cells, enhancing charge transfer efficiency and response speed.

Thermal management is handled by an intelligent uniform-temperature liquid cooling system that keeps temperature differences across the battery pack within 3°C during high-power charging. A fast-charging adaptive strategy actively monitors cell temperatures in real time, dynamically adjusting power output curves. Continuous closed-loop checks on voltage and capacity protect against overcharging or overvoltage.

This announcement intensifies competition in China’s emerging flash-charging sector. Earlier this year, BYD unveiled its Blade Battery 2.0, capable of 10% to 70% SOC in 5 minutes and 10% to 97% in 9 minutes, with low-temperature performance down to –30°C. CATL’s third-generation Shenxing cell delivers 10% to 80% in 3 minutes 44 seconds and 10% to 98% in 6 minutes 27 seconds, also handling –30°C charging in under 10 minutes. Geely’s Energee Golden Brick reaches 4 minutes 22 seconds to 70% and 8 minutes 42 seconds to 97% SOC, though it is currently offered only in the Lynk & Co 10. BYD’s Blade Battery 2.0 remains the only technology deployed across multiple mass-produced models to date.

As automakers and battery developers continue to refine cell materials, thermal controls, and charging algorithms, sub-4-minute charging is becoming a realistic target for next-generation electric vehicles.
