On September 15, 2026, the 2026 Global Low-Carbon Industry Forum was held in Shenzhen to examine the use of grid-forming and artificial intelligence technologies in renewable power systems. The event was co-hosted by the Global Solar Council, China Energy Research Society, World Alliance for Low Carbon Cities, Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School and Huawei Digital Power.
Huawei said regions face different energy-transition priorities, including system safety in markets with high renewable penetration, power supply and costs in emerging economies, and electricity access in underdeveloped regions. Hou Jinlong, director of the board of Huawei and president of Huawei Digital Power, said combining grid-forming technology with AI could support reliability, affordability and security of supply.
Speakers also discussed the growing role of energy storage as system inertia declines. Patrick Clerens, secretary-general of Energy Storage Europe, described European market mechanisms for services including synthetic inertia and fast frequency support. Fraunhofer IWES researcher Pouya Mostashar presented results from a megawatt-scale grid-forming test conducted with Huawei under VDE FNN guidelines. According to the presentation, the battery energy storage systems were tested for inertia response, overload capacity and islanded operation.
Terra Solar Philippines Inc. also presented its MTerra Solar project, which combines 3.5 GW of photovoltaic capacity with a 4.5 GWh grid-forming energy storage system. The company said the first phase, comprising 2.5 GWp of PV and 3.3 GWh of battery storage, was completed and commissioned on August 26, 2026, and had entered commercial operation. The project is expected to supply power for about 2.4 million households and reduce carbon emissions by more than 4.3 million tons annually.
Huawei Forum Highlights 4.5 GWh Grid-Forming Project
At the September 15, 2026 forum, MTerra Solar’s completed Phase 1 illustrated grid-forming PV+ESS at commercial scale.
Europe’s first megawatt-level grid forming test followed the world’s first comprehensive guideline; Huawei’s four-layer AI architecture targets GW level AIDC.
At the close of the forum, the co-hosts and industry participants launched the Global Joint Initiative on Grid Forming & AI. The initiative is intended to accelerate deployment and standardization of the technologies and improve access to stable, affordable electricity, with the organizers citing nearly 700 million people worldwide who lack electricity access.
