IBU-tec advanced materials AG announced another step in the development of what it describes as Europe’s largest lithium iron phosphate, or LFP, production facility. The State Administrative Office of Saxony-Anhalt has approved new operating buildings for the company’s battery material production platform at its Bitterfeld-Wolfen site. The planned site is designed for an annual capacity of 15,000 tons of battery material and will also include a new laboratory equipped for testing battery materials made from different material combinations.
The approval follows several recent milestones tied to IBU-tec’s plan to begin large-scale LFP battery material production in 2028. According to the company, work on logistics infrastructure has continued as planned, the analytical testing range has been expanded, and IT systems have been aligned with the project schedule. In addition, detailed engineering for the production facilities has started, and the steel structure for a logistics hall with storage capacity for around 2,000 pallets has already been erected on site. Interior construction is expected to be completed by the end of the year, while trial operation of the spray tower is scheduled for the end of the fourth quarter.
IBU-tec said the production facility in Bitterfeld-Wolfen is expected to enter operation at the beginning of 2028. At that point, the company says it will be the only provider in Europe capable of producing LFP cathode material on an industrial scale. PowerCo SE has secured the full capacity for a 10-year period based on previously defined prices.
The company also noted that the production platform could be used not only for electric mobility applications, but also for battery materials for stationary energy storage and certain defense technology applications.
