PowerX Inc. announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Elektroprivreda Crne Gore AD Nikšić (EPCG), Montenegro’s national electricity utility, to collaborate on battery energy storage systems (BESS). The agreement, signed on May 7, targets the deployment of approximately 500 megawatt-hours of BESS capacity over the initial three-year term. This initiative is designed to facilitate large-scale integration of renewable energy and bolster grid stability in Montenegro.

Montenegro’s National Energy and Climate Plan, adopted in December 2025, sets a goal of achieving a minimum 50% share of renewable energy by 2030. As the country’s largest electricity producer, EPCG has identified BESS as a critical element for modernizing its grid and enhancing its capacity to manage variable renewable generation. Under the terms of the MOU, PowerX and EPCG will work together to develop optimized deployment strategies that support grid reliability, peak shaving, and frequency regulation. The cooperation also includes comprehensive after-sales service, and PowerX will assess the feasibility of establishing local BESS assembly facilities in Montenegro.

Montenegro’s status as a candidate for European Union membership and its power interconnection with Italy underscore the strategic importance of its energy infrastructure. PowerX aims to leverage this partnership as a springboard for broader entry into the European BESS market.

“Battery energy storage systems are becoming a core part of modern energy infrastructure, enabling greater integration of renewable energy while supporting grid stability, flexibility, and resilience,” said Masahiro Ito, CEO of PowerX. “As Japan’s leading BESS provider, PowerX is pleased to partner with EPCG to support Montenegro’s energy transition and the modernization of its power system. Through this strategic cooperation, we aim not only to deploy advanced battery storage solutions, but also to build a long-term foundation for PowerX’s activities in Montenegro and the wider region, including the development of local battery system assembly capabilities.”

“This partnership represents an important step in the modernization of our power system and further confirms EPCG’s commitment to an energy transition based on innovation and sustainability,” said Zdravko Dragaš, CEO of EPCG. “Cooperation with PowerX gives us access to advanced energy storage technologies, which are essential for the stable integration of renewable energy sources and the long-term energy security of Montenegro.”

PowerX specializes in the development and manufacture of modular BESS solutions, battery-buffered EV charging systems, and grid-scale battery farms. EPCG operates the majority of Montenegro’s power generation, transmission, and distribution infrastructure, including hydropower, thermal, wind, and solar assets.
