QuantumScape Corporation announced on October 21, 2026, plans to develop a battery cell production line with 100 MWh of annual capacity. The line is intended to supply solid-state lithium-metal batteries for markets including AI data centers, aerospace, and defense, with the start of cell production targeted for 2028.
QuantumScape has partnered with Muehlbauer Group as an equipment ecosystem provider for the project. The German automation and manufacturing technology company will provide cell assembly equipment and support the development of higher-throughput production processes.
QuantumScape is currently demonstrating scalable solid-state battery production at its highly automated Eagle Line pilot facility in San Jose, California. Muehlbauer evaluated the Eagle Line’s processes and developed design enhancements intended to transfer the technology toward mass production. Engineering work on the processes and equipment for the planned 100 MWh line is underway.
According to QuantumScape, the production project is part of its effort to scale solid-state lithium-metal battery technology toward gigawatt-hour manufacturing. The company’s technology is designed to provide greater energy density, faster charging, and enhanced safety compared with legacy energy storage technologies.
Muehlbauer has around 4,500 employees across 40 locations worldwide and 45 years of experience in production systems. The company specializes in high-precision, high-speed assembly systems, including equipment designed for cleanroom environments. More than 90,000 of its machines and systems have been installed worldwide.
