Samsung SDI has announced that it will rigorously enforce its patents and protect its proprietary prismatic cell technology amid rising competition in the segment. Speaking on the sidelines of InterBattery 2026 at Coex in Seoul, Joo Yong-lak, executive vice president and head of the company’s research center, warned that any unauthorized use or misappropriation of its prismatic battery innovations would not be tolerated.
Joo highlighted that Samsung SDI is closely monitoring the market as more battery makers and automakers explore prismatic cell offerings. He underscored the high barriers to entry for this format, noting that successful development demands extensive expertise across electrode materials, cell design, module assembly, manufacturing processes and production integration. “Building the depth of know-how required for prismatic cells cannot be achieved quickly,” he said.
The company’s intellectual property portfolio underpins its position. Since filing its first U.S. patent on prismatic cells in 1997, Samsung SDI has amassed roughly 1,200 registered patents in the United States. In comparison, leading competitors in China and Japan each hold about 600 such patents, while other domestic players have secured only around 30 to 40. Joo cited these figures as evidence of Samsung SDI’s long-standing investment in research and development.
At InterBattery 2026, Samsung SDI also introduced “PrismStack,” a new brand for its prismatic cell products. The PrismStack lineup features modular architectures, advanced electrode coatings and optimized thermal management solutions designed for electric vehicles, energy storage systems and select consumer applications. Company officials said the brand launch is part of a broader strategy to further differentiate their technology through integration of next-generation materials and cell designs.
Industry analysts view Joo’s remarks as a clear message to emerging competitors and as a public reaffirmation of Samsung SDI’s commitment to intellectual property protection. By combining a deep patent portfolio with ongoing innovation, the company aims to maintain its leadership in prismatic battery technology and safeguard its proprietary advancements.
