Vianode, an advanced battery materials company, and FAAM, a European battery cell manufacturer, announced on September 29, 2026, that they have demonstrated recycling graphite from battery production scrap into anode material. The companies said the results support development of a closed-loop value chain for battery-grade graphite.

During a development and qualification program, Vianode processed graphite concentrate recovered from FAAM’s anode production scrap and converted it into recycled anode-grade graphite. According to the companies, testing showed electrochemical performance comparable to virgin graphite materials. The work combined Vianode’s proprietary synthetic graphite technology with FAAM’s battery manufacturing capabilities.

Vianode and FAAM are now expanding the collaboration to move the recycling process toward industrial deployment and further integrate recycled graphite into battery production. Their stated objective is to improve resource efficiency, reduce waste and strengthen regional battery supply chains by returning production scrap directly to the battery value chain.

The companies said graphite recycling remains difficult because lithium-ion battery applications require high material purity, consistent quality and reliable electrochemical performance. While recycling infrastructure for nickel, cobalt and copper is advancing, large-scale recovery and reuse of battery-grade graphite remains limited. The qualification results indicate that recovered graphite from anode manufacturing scrap can be processed for reuse without compromising the tested performance, according to the announcement.

The partners will continue scaling the technology and exploring further opportunities to increase circularity and resource efficiency in battery manufacturing. Vianode is developing regional synthetic and recycled graphite production in North America and Europe. It operates its Via ONE anode graphite plant in Norway and is building the Via TWO facility in St. Thomas, Canada. FAAM develops and manufactures lithium-ion batteries for mobility, energy storage and industrial uses.
