ZincFive announced on September 28, 2026, that it is expanding its nickel-zinc battery portfolio with in-rack energy storage for artificial intelligence data centers. The company is developing battery backup units and AI dynamic power modules to address both established backup requirements and short-duration, recurring changes in power demand.
AI applications are increasing rack power densities and creating more dynamic workloads, changing the requirements placed on data center power architectures. In addition to maintaining backup power, these architectures must respond to rapid load fluctuations that can place substantial stress on electrical infrastructure.
According to ZincFive, existing rack-level technologies often involve a trade-off between energy capacity and response speed. Conventional battery backup units are primarily designed to maintain power for a defined period. Capacitor-based systems can respond quickly to changing loads, but provide energy for a limited duration and offer restricted scalability.
ZincFive’s in-rack power solutions will use nickel-zinc battery technology in dedicated battery backup unit and AI dynamic power module configurations. The company said the approach is intended to give original equipment manufacturers and hyperscale data center operators flexibility to select configurations based on workload characteristics, rack design and power architecture.
The battery backup units are intended to support conventional continuity requirements when the primary power supply is interrupted. The dynamic power modules are being developed to handle short-term power spikes associated with AI workloads. By positioning the systems at rack level, ZincFive aims to provide a rapid response close to the point of demand.
ZincFive CEO Tod Higinbotham said the industry needs approaches that can respond quickly to power demand changes without compromising safety, reliability or flexibility. The company plans to work with partners and customers as next-generation data center power architectures take shape.
