Company Overview

Ilika plc is a leading innovator in solid-state battery technology, founded in 2004 as a spin-out from the University of Southampton. Headquartered in Romsey, UK, with facilities in the UK, USA, and Japan, the company’s mission is to drive innovation in energy storage for transportation and healthcare.

Battery Technology

Ilika specializes in solid-state battery (SSB) technology, replacing liquid electrolytes with a ceramic-oxide electrolyte. It manufactures batteries with silicon anodes and oxide electrolytes, delivering enhanced safety, efficiency, and performance through proprietary SSB manufacturing processes.

Products

Goliath Batteries: large-format SSBs for EVs and consumer electronics with silicon anode and oxide electrolyte, offering lighter weight, higher energy density, faster charging; Goliath D5 prototype passed nail penetration tests at 300 °C lower failure temperature. Stereax Batteries: micro-format SSBs for medical implants and IoT devices, non-toxic, high energy density; licensed to Cirtec Medical for use in pacemakers, neurostimulation devices, and smart orthopedics.

Recent Projects

Goliath D5 prototype demonstrated a 300 °C lower failure temperature and passed safety tests, with upgraded prototypes and customer evaluations planned for 2025. Stereax line: manufacturing equipment commissioned at Cirtec Medical’s Lowell, Massachusetts facility, process qualification underway, commercial sales anticipated in 2025. SISTEM project: a £2.7 million program to build an automated EV cell assembly line with 1.5 MWh/year capacity.

Investors

Ilika’s investors include IP Group, Nomura Holdings, Invesco Perpetual, Artemis Investment Management and St Peter Port Capital. The company went public in 2010 and raised further capital through placings in 2012, 2018 and 2020.
