Incipientus Ultrasound Flow Technologies AB is a high-technology company based in Gothenburg, Sweden. The company specializes in advanced, non-invasive, in-line process monitoring tools for industrial liquids. Incipientus is led by the three founders, Johan Wiklund (CEO), Reinhardt Kotze (CTO), and Michal Kotze (CPO) experts in ultrasound, rheology, and fluid dynamics. The company’s work is built upon extensive research collaborations with institutions such as RISE-Research Institutes of Sweden AB, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, and ETH Zurich.

Incipientus develops ultrasound-based sensor technologies that provide continuous, real-time data on the flow and rheological properties of complex industrial liquids. This is particularly relevant for non-Newtonian fluids, whose viscosity changes under different flow conditions. Incipientus’ innovations aim to replace traditional, manual laboratory testing with automated, touch-free, in-line monitoring solutions. This approach supports Industry 4.0 principles, emphasizing digitalization, automation, sustainability, and efficient production processes.

Battery Technology

While Incipientus does not manufacture battery cells, materials, or chemistries, its technologies play a role in the battery production ecosystem, particularly in slurry-based processes essential for lithium-ion battery manufacturing. The company’s in-line, ultrasound-based visco-rheometer continuously monitors the viscosity and flow properties of electrode slurries, such as those used for cathode and anode mixes, electrolyte formulations, and coatings on current collectors.

This technology provides continuous process data, which helps ensure uniform slurry consistency and reduces the risk of defects, supporting battery safety and performance. The system allows for immediate adjustments during mixing and coating steps, minimizing material waste and increasing production yield. By enabling real-time monitoring and process optimization, Incipientus’ technology reduces the reliance on slower, off-line laboratory analyses, thereby accelerating quality assurance and production cycles. Essentially, Incipientus’ technology improves the efficiency, consistency, and sustainability of wet-processing steps in battery manufacturing, directly impacting battery cell quality, energy density, operational safety, and overall lifecycle performance.

Recent Projects

Incipientus’ visco-rheometer system for battery manufacturing was showcased at TraWeBa’s Battery Spotlight event in 2025. This project is part of the German “Transformation Wertschöpfungskette Batterie” (TraWeBa) initiative, which receives funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action.

Investors

Incipientus has received backing from several investors. Butterfly Ventures led the most recent major funding round in 2023. Seven District and Marinvest co-led this funding round. Additionally, GU Ventures AB served as an incubator and early-stage investor during the company’s development phase.
