Powin is a global leader in utility-scale battery energy storage solutions (BESS), dedicated to accelerating the transition to a carbon-free energy future. Headquartered in Tualatin, Oregon, the company leverages a vertically integrated approach—from battery design and system manufacturing to software development and deployment—to deliver safe, reliable, and cost-effective energy storage systems for utilities, commercial and industrial sectors, and large-scale renewable projects.

With 600+ employees worldwide and a network of six global offices, Powin has deployed over 10 GWh of storage capacity, contributing to greater grid resilience, renewable energy integration, and reduced fossil fuel dependence.

Battery Technology

Powin’s core technology revolves around lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery systems, renowned for their high stability, long cycle life, and intrinsic safety compared to other lithium chemistries. The company’s vertically integrated manufacturing model ensures control over every component, from cell sourcing and module design to climate-controlled enclosure systems. The Powin Pod, its flagship product, is a 20-foot liquid-cooled container system capable of delivering up to 5 MWh of energy storage, featuring cell-level monitoring and cybersecurity protocols.

Central to Powin’s systems is the Stack™ hardware architecture, which modularly scales from kilowatts to hundreds of megawatts, enabling flexible deployment for variable project sizes. Complementing this is the StackOS software platform, offering centralized energy storage management, predictive analytics, and redundant control systems. StackOS enhances system reliability by integrating battery management (BMS), power electronics, and energy optimization, while real-time data reporting supports maintenance planning and yield maximization.

To ensure product durability and performance, Powin’s in-house Battery Lab (established in 2020) verifies over five million battery cells daily, with over one million cumulative cell testing hours. This rigorous testing, combined with a 42% annual increase in monitoring capacity, underpins Powin’s industry-leading warranties and power delivery guarantees up to 12 hours.

Recent Projects

In 2024, Powin advanced key projects, including the Inland Empire Energy Storage Facility in California (70 MW/280 MWh), reinforcing local grid stability through solar integration. Earlier in the year, the company’s systems supported power needs at Allegiant Stadium during a Super Bowl event, demonstrating versatility in large-venue energy management.

Looking ahead to 2025, Powin is expanding into emerging markets such as Brazil through a strategic partnership with UCB (Union das Cooperativas Brasileiras), targeting utility-scale storage growth in Latin America. Domestically, planned projects include the Waratah Super Battery in Australia—one of the world’s largest BESS installations—to store renewable energy and stabilize its national grid. The company also solidified battery cell supply chains via an agreement with EVE Energy’s new factory in China, securing access to advanced LFP cells for upcoming deployments.

Investors

Powin has secured significant financial support from major institutional and strategic investors, including Greenbelt Capital Partners, Trilantic Capital Partners, Energy Impact Partners, and GIC (Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund). In 2024, the company closed a $200 million revolving credit facility with KKR, managed via insurance accounts, to fuel global expansion. Guggenheim Securities has further supported Powin through financial advisory roles on capital raising and mergers and acquisitions. These partnerships underscore investor confidence in Powin’s leadership and scalability in the growing energy storage sector.
