SK tes is a global provider of technology lifecycle services, specializing in the secure and sustainable handling of IT assets and electronic waste. The company offers a range of services designed to maximize value recovery and support the circular economy, from managed IT deployment and data destruction to comprehensive IT asset disposition (ITAD). With operations spanning over 40 facilities worldwide, SK tes helps corporations manage their technology infrastructure responsibly throughout its lifespan.

Battery Technology

A significant area of focus for SK tes is the recycling of lithium-ion and electric vehicle (EV) batteries. The company has developed and implemented advanced processes to recover valuable materials from these complex battery chemistries. Their proprietary methods involve inert crushing and vacuum drying techniques, designed to safely and efficiently extract materials while minimizing environmental impact.

A key output of their process is “black mass,” a concentrated material rich in lithium, cobalt, and nickel. This black mass is then further refined to achieve high purities, often reaching up to 99%, making the recycled materials suitable for direct reuse in the manufacturing of new batteries. SK tes’s battery recycling operations worldwide work to recover critical raw materials from end-of-life EV batteries and other lithium-ion batteries, supporting the development of a closed-loop supply chain for the battery industry.

Recent Projects

Within the last year, SK tes has continued to expand its battery recycling infrastructure to meet growing global demand. A significant development is the operational status of their flagship EV battery recycling facility in Rotterdam, Netherlands. This facility is projected to process a substantial volume of batteries annually, targeting the European market’s increasing need for sustainable battery solutions.

Additionally, the company is planning a new battery recycling facility in Newcastle, Australia, with an anticipated readiness date in 2025, further extending their global capacity for processing end-of-life batteries. These strategic investments in facilities demonstrate SK tes’s commitment to scaling its battery recycling capabilities and contributing to sustainable material sourcing for the battery market.

Investors

SK tes is owned by SK ecoplant, a South Korean environmental services company. SK ecoplant completed its acquisition of a full stake in TES in 2022, valuing the company at approximately US$1 billion. This acquisition integrated TES into SK ecoplant’s portfolio and vision for a circular economy.
