BYD will bring its flash charging network in China to 10,000 stations on August 28, marking a halfway point toward its full-year target of 20,000 stations. The company said Thursday on Weibo that the completion ceremony for the milestone site will be held at 9:00 a.m. Beijing Time at the Longhua flagship flash charging station in Shenzhen.
The expansion reflects BYD’s efforts to build out its own charging infrastructure alongside the rollout of new models equipped with its second-generation Blade Battery. As of April 1, the company had 5,000 flash charging stations in operation in China, meaning the network will have doubled in fewer than five months. BYD reported 7,018 stations in operation as of June 30 in its latest available data.
To reach its year-end target, BYD would still need to add another 10,000 stations in roughly four months. That would require the company to complete about 80 stations per day from August 29 through the end of the year, implying a further acceleration in deployment.
The next-generation flash charger BYD introduced in March is rated at up to 1,500 kW through a single connector, with each unit featuring two connectors. Paired with the second-generation Blade Battery, the system can charge a vehicle from 10% to 97% in 9 minutes, according to the company.
BYD plans to develop 18,000 of the 20,000 stations in cooperation with Chinese charging-network operators, while the remaining 2,000 are slated for highway deployment. In June, the company also signed a framework agreement with Sinopec to use the energy company’s network of more than 30,000 integrated energy service stations to speed up the rollout.
The flash charging stations will be open to electric vehicles from other brands as well, although charging speed will depend on each vehicle’s capabilities. BYD also plans to expand the flash charging network overseas by the end of 2026. It has already deployed its first batch of stations in the United Kingdom and aims to install 300 there by year-end.
